Q&A with the bipolar architect session 2

Recently I have had some interesting questions come my way via my contact page. Here are the four question with answers.

Comment: First, I really really like your blog! It makes me smile more often than not. It’s more than just about our disease, it’s about your life. I wish you posted more! You said in one of your posts that if you had known more about mental health while growing up if you would’ve chosen a different career path. So I ask, do you think you would have chosen a career in mental health? Or what else?  You have all my blessings as you kick cancer ass! Best wishes!

Thank you for all the blog love. It’s absolutely a work in progress. Some days I just don’t know how to put what I am feeling into words as my thoughts feel jumbled together and without direction. I have pondered the thought of what could I have offered a career in the mental health sector and I have come to the conclusion …not that much. I feel that by living with this, eventually …as I learn more about myself and how to deal with the disease that through awareness and advocacy ….I’ll be able to offer far more than I ever could as a psychiatrist or psychologist (plus I would feel I’d have too much responsibility – of someones life)…I can’t wait for the day when I am able to feel like I’m making a difference for someone with that’s going through this struggle. Even if just one person. Now, to answer the “what else”? …well, a super hero of course. My super power would be the ability to time travel.

Comment: Have you ever tried pot to counteract your symptoms?

No, I have not. I do not have anything against marijuana or those that use it …I do think for some people it gives them the ability to live. Whether that be for pain control or anxiety control, the ability to live and function in today’s society is a great thing. Personally, I do not believe that would be a solution to my symptoms. I smoked pot maybe 4-5 times during my first go round with cancer and it did help me rest/relax…but that’s about it. I would not be able to function as a professional (once I get back to that) if I smoked marijuana …plus, I’m not a fan of the lung damage. I’m sure that medicinal marijuana will be more popular for many health conditions within the next decade.

Comment: I’m an architecture student who has BPD and I can’t afford Latuda. It appears that you don’t have a job right now. How do you afford the drug?

You are correct, I currently am jobless but I did go on an interview a few weeks ago that seems pretty promising. I think I’m almost ready to return to the workforce. Latuda, unfortunately is a very expensive drug unless you have health insurance or government assistance… If you have government assistance or qualify for it then you pay close to nothing. My private insurance covers most of the drug but there are coupons from the manufacturer that can be used and you’re only responsible for a$15 copay. I think that is only if you have insurance but you can still save money if you’re paying out of pocket. $125 savings per month. Here’s a link for the Latuda Coupon.

I won’t even get started on my opinion of big pharma. I’d be here all night.

Comment: I finally got around to watching Comet! OMG I loved it! Thank you soooo much for recommending it. If you were in a parallel universe would you choose to be with J??? What are some more of your favorite movies? I’m so sorry that you have cancer again. You are so strong. I can’t even imagine.

I’m glad you enjoyed the film. It will forever remain as one of the more meaningful films for me due to me being able to relate so much and Emmy Rossum is just beautiful. Hmmm…parallel universe….yea, why not? If I can’t be with her here in this universe then of course a parallel. I will admit…I thought J and I would conquer anything …hell, if John and Alicia Nash could make it through everything and marry each other twice…then why couldn’t we get through 2.5 – 3 years? People forgive worse…people make it through harder times…I digress …

Top 15 favorite films:

  1. Beautiful Mind
  2. Comet
  3. Cloud Atlas
  4. Crash
  5. Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  6. Silver Linings Playbook
  7. Inception
  8. Stepbrothers
  9. Grand Budapest Hotel
  10. Tombstone
  11. Home Alone
  12. Top Gun
  13. Jerry McGurie
  14. The Town
  15. Nightmare Before Xmas

    1. I recommend it…you never know what’ll come your way. I had an architecture student about 2 weeks ago that wanted my opinion on her thesis and for the days that we kept the convo going…those were good days…I love helping others, especially if it has anything to do with design.

If/when you do add it, make sure to check your junk mail if you have it directed to your personal email. That’s where mine ended up for a few months.

      1. quick question – does wordpress notify you when you when someone sends you a message through your contact page, because I don’t check that particular email often.

      2. no, not for my account at least. There could be a way to set it up that way but I wouldn’t know how. Another way you can check it without looking in your email is in the general account settings, go down to the feedback menu and any questions submitted will be there.

  1. Dear Mr. Architect,
You seem to have quite a following… what do you do with all those crazies who email you and won’t leave you alone?

    Ms. Grace :p
